Never question my loyalty

“It’s good to see you again, Miss Mendoza.” Officer Terry rendered her a genuine smile.

Danna smiled back as she took the pen the officer was extending to her. “It’s good to see you too, girl. I like your hair like that.”

Officer Terry ran her hand over the long-braided ponytail and pushed it over her shoulder. “I needed something for this heat. It’s too hot out there for all that weave.”

“Honey, who are you telling? I almost melted walking from my car.” Danna finally looked down at the paper, preparing to sign in, when she felt a funny feeling rising in her chest.

Her eyes scanned the paper a couple of times, reading the same name over and over again to be sure she was seeing what she knew she was.

“That fucking liar, I knew it,” Danna mumbled to herself.

She studied the paper a few more seconds, making sure that it was Don’s baby mama’s name, before looking up at Officer Terry. She was leaning over scrolling on the computer. Danna watched how Officer Terry’s hand shook slightly as she did her best to avoid eye contact. A clear sign of nervousness.

“Hey, Officer Terry, let me ask you something really quick.”

As soon as Officer Terry turned her head, Danna could see the guilty expression plastered across her face. Although, she knew Terry was cool with her, she was sure her loyalty lay with Don, so asking her about his Totiana’s name being on his list was probably pointless, but it was a good thing Danna was the queen of doing pointless shit.

“Don’s got somebody back there now?”

“Umm. I’m not sure. Let me check for you.”

Danna watched as Officer Terry observed the sign-in chart before walking over to her computer. In Danna’s opinion, it took her a little too long to do something she did all day every day, but she was going to give her the benefit of the doubt. It was obvious she knew Don’s ass was caught up and wasn’t exactly sure what she was to be doing at that moment.

“You can sit down, Danna. I’ll let you know as soon as I find something out.” The fake smile plastered on Officer Terry’s face was nothing like the one she’d had when Danna first arrived.

“Make it quick if you can, please,” Danna told her before taking a seat in the corner.

All types of thoughts and scenarios were racing through Danna’s mind as she sat still trying to keep herself calm. It was literally taking everything in her not to go off at that moment. She knew Don was on some shady shit. Most niggas in prison were, but she had honestly put it past that fool. Or maybe she was the fool. She was the one being played by a nigga sitting in a damn jail cell.

Danna sighed and grabbed her head in both of her hands. Her mind was on a million and she wished for just one moment it would calm down.

“Okay girl, thank you. I’ll see you next time.
